The Problem

The client, a premium fitness equipment e-commerce store, came to us with a 15% quarter-over-quarter decline in organic traffic. Three issues were compounding the problem. First, poor rankings for high-intent commercial keywords — the site wasn't showing up for the exact searches that lead to purchases, like "best home gym equipment" and other category-specific buying queries. Second, multiple technical SEO issues: slow page speed, unresolved Core Web Vitals failures, and broken internal links were quietly suppressing rankings across the entire site. Third, there was no content strategy supporting the commercial pages — no supporting blog content, no internal linking structure, and no topical authority built up in the "home gym equipment" space. Search engines weight page experience, site speed, and topical depth heavily in competitive e-commerce niches, and this site was losing on all three fronts at once.

Strategy

We ran a comprehensive six-month SEO strategy built around three pillars: fix the technical foundation, build topical authority through content, and earn authority signals through links. 1. Technical SEO Audit & Fixes — Before investing in content or links, we cleaned up the technical foundation the rest of the strategy would sit on. We resolved Core Web Vitals issues, cutting page load time from 8.2 seconds to 1.8 seconds — a 78% improvement that directly affects both rankings and conversion, since slow pages lose customers before they ever see a product. We fixed broken internal and external links that were wasting crawl budget and passing users to dead ends. And we implemented Product schema markup across the full catalog, so search engines — and increasingly AI shopping assistants — could accurately parse pricing, availability, and reviews directly from search results. 2. Content Cluster Strategy — Rather than publishing scattered blog posts, we built a structured content hub around "home gym equipment": a pillar page supported by cluster content targeting specific buyer questions, comparison queries, and long-tail commercial searches. This gave the category and product pages internal links from relevant, authoritative supporting content, and let the site compete for a much wider set of commercial keywords instead of just a handful of head terms. 3. Link Building & Digital PR — To build the authority signals search engines use to trust a domain, we ran guest posting on relevant fitness and lifestyle publications, a digital PR campaign to earn coverage and backlinks from higher-authority sites, and unlinked brand mention reclamation — finding places the brand was already mentioned online without a link and converting those mentions into backlinks.

Results

Over the six-month engagement, organic traffic grew from 15,000 to 78,000 monthly sessions — a 420% increase. That growth translated into 156 keywords ranking in the top 10 search results, and, most importantly for the business, a 458% increase in organic revenue. The technical fixes alone had a compounding effect: the page speed improvement from 8.2 seconds to 1.8 seconds meant faster pages ranked better, and once visitors arrived, they converted at a noticeably higher rate simply because the site no longer felt slow or broken. The results show why sequencing matters in e-commerce SEO — fixing the technical foundation first, layering in content that builds topical authority, then earning the authority signals that let that authority compound.
